Beautification Commission Help Keep Darien Green and Clean

DARIEN, Conn. -- Keeping one of America's most picturesque towns looking postcard-perfect is no easy task. However, thanks to the efforts of the Darien Beautification Commission, the town keeps its charm the details, large and small.

Comprised of a 13 member board, the commission hosts several programs throughout the year designed to preserving the town's appeal. For instance, on Earth Day last April community members came together by cleaning the town from top to bottom. The Darien Beautification Commission worked with the Chamber of Commerce and volunteers to provide trash bags, plastic gloves and picks as they cleaned up beaches, parks and parking lots around town.

"I think the Beautification Commission is a wonderful group," said Mariann Castell, Darien's Town Historian. "The time and effort they have expended to maintain some of the neglected areas in town really is a great thing."

In addition to maintenance efforts, the committee sponsors several planting and gardening initiatives. One of the projects, Adopt-a-Garden, allows local families and friends to establish commemorative gardens for loved ones. Shopping along the Post Road? For the past decade, the Darien Beautification Commission has hung flower pots from the light posts that line the downtown. Last year, 181 baskets were displayed throughout Darien.

"The flower baskets are just one of the many great things the Beautification Commission has done for this community," said Kaye Leong, Assistant Treasurer at Darien Rowayton Bank which is headquartered on the Post Road. "It's not just one person behind all these projects but all the members are responsible for making Darien beautiful."
