They don't rank nearly as high Detroit or St. Louis, but these Connecticut cities have the notorious distinction of being named among America's top 100 most dangerous cities.
In this ranking by alarms.org of cities with the most violent crimes per 100,000 population, New Haven ranked 67th and Hartford ranked 77th nationwide.
New Haven has a population of about 130,000 and the study found it had 1,289 violent crimes (per 100,000) in the most recent year statistics were available.
Hartford has a population of about 125,000 and the study found it had 1,210 violent crimes (per 100,000) in the most recent year statistics were available.
The two Connecticut cities actually ranked worse when compared only against the largest cities with populations of more than 100,000. In that comparison, New Haven ranked 13th most dangerous in America, while Hartford was the 15th most dangerous among the nation's largest cities.
Two smaller Connecticut communities made alarm.org's ranking for locations experiencing the greatest year-to-year increase in violent crimes reported. On that list, Wilton ranked 12th with 42 violent crimes, while New Canaan ranked 49th with 39 violent crimes.
