SHELTON, Conn. — You don’t have long to wait for the start of farmers market season in Shelton, which will officially open on May 6 this year.
The market boasts one of the earliest start dates in the area — as well as a host of veggies, crafts, meat, eggs, essential oils, even dog beds all grown, raised or created by the farmers and artisans at the market.
Organizers take pride in the producer-only philosophy and the many other things that make Shelton’s market a real standout.
“We have been working very hard to grow our market and have seen many advances since we evolved into a certified producer-only market in 2015 after a very successful 22-year existence on Canal Street in Shelton,” said Lisa Cheney of the market’s marketing committee.
The Shelton market also offers a $25 membership option to its customers. Members receive a membership card, a market tote and special offers from all vendors each Saturday from May to Thanksgiving.
The donation helps sustain the market and is not required of customers.
Little ones can feel invested in the market through Valley Sprouts, a new children’s club kicking off this year.
The Valley Sprouts will have their own tent, where they can enjoy a sensory table, coloring pages and self-guided crafts each Saturday. Special once-a-month events will include yoga, music and agricultural education.
Sprouts will also be able to shop for a vegetable each week to encourage healthy choices.
The cost is $10 for the first child and $5 for each sibling.
The 2017 season will run each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May 6 until Thanksgiving. From June through October, the market will be open on Wednesdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m.
You’ll also find live music and breakfast and lunch options on most days.
