SHELTON, Conn. -- The Distinguished Alumni Award of the Year for St. Vincent's College in Bridgeport goes to Shelton resident Ann Ballas, class of 1981.
Ballas, a registered nurse, was presented the award during the Annual Alumni Day Cocktail Reception.
This award is presented to alumnus who act as a role model for excellence in the field of health care and demonstrate the underlying attributes of St. Vincent de Paul. These attributes emphasize compassion, a generous spirit, fidelity, respect, gentleness in attitude and advocacy for the poor.
She began her career at St. Vincent's Medical Center as a nurse's aide with the float staff while attending St. Vincent's School of Nursing.
After earning her registered nurse degree, Ballas joined St. Vincent's Radiology Department, where today she leads a team of nurses and acts as a liaison between the department and the nursing units.
In 2010, she received the St. Vincent's Medical Center Employee of the Year award.
She has been an employee at the Medical Center for more than 30 years and is currently pursuing her bachelor of science in nursing.
"Ann is a shining example of the foundation a St. Vincent's College education provides and we are so proud to call her one of our own," stated Michael Gargano, Jr., president of St. Vincent's College.
