The American Cancer Society will host the two-mile walk through Seaside Park at 10 a.m., Oct. 22.
City Council members Denise Taylor-Moye and Michelle Lyons, both breast cancer survivors, told those gathered about how they supported each other through their battles with the disease that affects one in every eight women.
“We were not just fighting for city stuff,” Taylor-Moye said. “We were fighting for our lives.”
Members of the city’s police department will walk in memory of Sgt. Jessica Tillson, a 21-year veteran of the force who lost her battle with cancer on Sept. 16.
After fighting breast cancer, the mother of a teen daughter learned in 2012 that the disease had spread throughout her body.
“It’s an insidious disease,” said Capt. Mark Straubel.
Money raised through the walk will go to research and programming for local patients, survivors and their families, said Kristen Welton, senior manager at American Cancer Society.
The society will also hold a happy hour fundraiser from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Oct. 11, at Milano Wine Bar & Pizzeria, 281 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. State Sens. Christopher Rosario and Steve Stafstrom, Bridgeport City Council President Tom McCarthy and Fred Garrity, Jr., chair of Trumbull Planning & Zoning, will be guest bartenders.
“Every day that we push back, collectively, we make gains,” said Mayor Joe Ganim.
