BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A Vietnam veteran who was one of the two school crossing guards hit by a car remained in critical condition Wednesday, a day after the accident in Bridgeport, according to the Connecticut Post.

The 68-year-old Bridgeport man suffered two broken legs and a brain bleed after the accident at 8 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Park and North avenues. He took the brunt of the impact and was dragged about 40 feet, police said.

His crossing guard partner of nine years, a 50-year-old Bridgeport woman, has been released from the hospital after suffering only minor injuries, the Connecticut Post said.

A 47-year-old Bridgeport woman was traveling east on North Avenue in a Nissan Sentra when she crossed the intersection and mounted the curb, striking the two on-duty crossing guards who were standing on the sidewalk, police said.

The driver had just dropped off her child at the nearby Geraldine Johnson Elementary School.

She told police that she blacked out before the crash, and she was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, police said.

Her car skidded about 40 feet before coming to a final stop at the North Avenue entrance to the People's Bank, police said.

No charges have been filed in the accident, which is still under police investigation.

School resource police officers are working at the intersection as crossing guards for the rest of the week, the Post said.
