Bridgeport Woman Gets Prison Time For Unemployment Fraud

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A Bridgeport woman was sentenced to prison for fraudulently collecting nearly $3,000 in unemployment benefits and submitting fake documents to obtain favorable treatment in court.

Christie M. Gray, 41, of Bridgeport pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of third-degree larceny and one count of second-degree forgery, and will serve two-and-a-half years in prison, followed by two-and-a-half years of special parole. She was also ordered by Superior Court Judge Joan K. Alexander not to be employed in a position involving the finances of a person or organization.

Gray was arrested in April of 2015 by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit in the office of the Chief State's Attorney and charged with fraudulently collecting $2,946 in unemployment benefits in 2014.

She was arrested again this year and charged with submitting fabricated documents to the court in an attempt to obtain a more favorable disposition in her case.

Both cases were prosecuted by the Unemployment Compensation Fraud Unit, which was established under a partnership between the Division of Criminal Justice and the Department of Labor to investigate and prosecute fraud in the Unemployment Compensation program.
