UPDATED: REDDING, Conn. — A commuter train hit a car that was on the tracks at Topstone Road in Redding along the Danbury Branch on Tuesday night, Metro-North said.

The one person in the car, whose condition was unknown, was taken to the hospital, Metro-North spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman said.

Service was suspended in both directions along the Danbury Branch for over two hours after the accident at 9:10 p.m., she said. Train service was restored at about midnight.

The "unauthorized vehicle" on the tracks was hit by the 8:06 p.m. northbound train heading from South Norwalk to Danbury, Gamerman said.

The train was due in Danbury at 8:55 p.m., but all Metro-North trains were running late Tuesday due to congestion and slip-slide conditions on the wet tracks, she said.

None of the 30 people onboard the train at the time of the accident were hurt. As of 10:15 p.m., some passengers were still on the train, but others had been allowed to disembark and get rides home, Gamerman said.

Redding police advised residents Tuesday evening that Topstone Road was closed due to a car vs train accident. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes. The road had reopened by early Wednesday.
