Services Set For Elizabeth 'Betty' Pfriem, Southport Philanthropist

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Services have been scheduled for Elizabeth M. "Betty" Pfriem, a generous local philanthropist and former president and publisher of the Bridgeport Post and Telegram.

Pfriem died Saturday at the age of 92 in her Southport home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, in the United Congregational Church, 877 Park Ave., Bridgeport. Her entombment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Many local institutions are named for her, including the Elizabeth M. Pfriem Pediatric Emergency Center at Bridgeport Hospital, according to the Connecticut Post.

At St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation, she was a major force behind the creation Elizabeth M. Pfriem SWIM Center for Cancer Care and the Regina Cozza Vascular Center, named for Pfriem’s close friend, according to the Post. 

She also supported the Barnum Museum, the Visiting Nurse Service of Connecticut, Operation Hope and the Jenny Lind concerts of the Barnum Festival. 

She was predeceased by her husband John Pfriem, retired President and CEO of the Bridgeport Post and Telegram. She became publisher upon his death in 1983, serving until the newspaper was sold to Thomson Corp. in 1988.
