The accident happened at 7:16 a.m. Thursday on the southbound side of I-95 just north of Exit 25, state police said. It closed two lanes of the highway and caused traffic jams in the morning commute.

State Trooper Joseph Longo, 44, spotted the black Ford SUV, which "passed his cruiser at a high rate of speed in the median," state police said.

Longo pulled his cruiser from the left land and into the median to try to stop the SUV, state police said.

State Trooper Thomas Glowacki, 50, was in the center lane of I-95 — ahead of Longo — and also spotted the SUV, state police said.

Glowacki then crossed the left land and also pulled his cruiser into the median, ahead of Longo's cruiser, state police said.

Then, Longo veered left to try to avoid the other cruiser, but struck the cement barrier in the median and the side of the other cruiser, state police said.

Longo's cruiser sustained moderate front end damage. Glowacki's cruiser was moderately damaged on the driver's side and front end.

Both drivers said they were OK and refused medical attention at the scene. Both cruisers were towed from the highway.

The two lanes on I-95 southbound were reopened at about 8:30 a.m., DOT said.

Traffic was backed up for about 2 miles to Exit 27 after the accident and during the cleanup, according to the DOT.
