On Monday, Sept. 4, a Mill Hill Terrace homeowner reported his daughter came home around 3:30 p.m. to find the home’s rear door open and its belongings had been rummaged through, police said.
Among the missing items were a jewelry box, a jar containing $1,200 in cash, several handbags, a leaf blower, spare keys, gift cards and an Apple MacBook, police said.
The homeowners had been away for the weekend and didn’t know when the crime occurred.
On the day before, Sunday, Sept. 3, Fairfield officers pulled over a driver for several motor vehicle violations, police said.
When he was stopped on Mill Hill Terrace near Osborne Lane, the driver, identified as Andre Genest, 28, of Maple Street, Bridgeport, attempted to flee and was apprehended in some bushes nearby, police said.
He was charged with a host of motor vehicle violations and was released after making a $5,000 bond.
Police created an inventory of items in the car, including several pieces of jewelry, which were later determined to be from a Shelton burglary. Genest is a suspect in burglaries in Shelton and Naugatuck, police said.
Other pieces were from the Mill Hill Terrace burglary police had no way of knowing about because it hadn’t been reported yet.
On Sept. 5, Genest used his own ID to pawn 11 additional pieces of jewelry at East Coast Pawn in Bridgeport, police said.
Genest was at court Friday on another matter and was charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny. He was held on $50,000 bond and appeared in court on Nov. 3.
