The fatal crash occurred at 11:35 p.m. as the 2015 Chrysler 200 was heading south near Exit 46 of the Merritt near the Fairfield-Trumbull border, state police said.

The car began taking the exit ramp at Exit 46 but failed to negotiate the curve, continued straight off the road and into the woods, then slammed into a tree, state police said. The crash area is near the rest area.

The car had been sought earlier in the night in connection with an evading crash in Stratford, according to the Connecticut Post. The Chrysler hit the personal vehicle of an off-duty trooper, the Post said.

It was not known whether the car was being pursued by police when the crash occurred, the Post said.

The identity of driver was unknown, police said.

No further information was released on the incident.
