Police said Mark Bento, 60, of Congress Street, was driving a Ford pickup with a full load of firewood west on Congress around 11 p.m when he veered to the right and struck the rock and trees, causing two flat tires on his passenger side.

The truck caused gouge marks up North Avenue.

Officers caught up to Bento driving south on Black Rock Turnpike near Hemlock Road.

He failed field sobriety tests and was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, failure to drive right, evading responsibility and driving with an unsecured load, police said.

Since some of the wood broke his rear window and may have struck Bento in the crash, he was brought to the hospital for evaluation.

Bento was released on a promise to appear in court on Nov. 28.
