Angel Laporte, 58, of State Street, New Haven, who was charged with public indecency and breach of peace, has a record of similar charges in Connecticut and New York dating back to at least 2002, police said.

The woman told police she was in a conference room at the main Old Post Road library around 3:15 p.m. May 13 when a man sitting nearby pulled out his penis and began rubbing it and looking at her. She took a photo with her cell phone and the man covered up, told her he was sorry and exited the building, police said.

Police released an intelligence report to other police departments and released the photo through the media.

A Newtown police officer who saw the photo called to identify Laporte as a man arrested for public indecency and other charges there in 2002, police said. An anonymous caller who said he attended high school with Laporte also identified him, police said.

Officers picked up Laporte when he went to meet his probation officer Friday, police said.

Laporte has five previous arrests in Connecticut, including three for public indecency, police said. He has been arrested for public lewdness on several occasions in New York, police said.

He was held on $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 6.
