Fleeing Drug Trafficker Busted After Foot Chase, Stratford Police Say

STRATFORD, Conn. — A nearly yearlong investigation of a suspected drug trafficker ended with a car and foot chase and the arrest of the suspect on Thursday on multiple charges, including operating a drug factory, Stratford police said.

On Thursday, officers from the Stratford Police Department's Narcotics, Vice & Intelligence Unit concluded their investigation into Robert Heyward, 35, of Stratford. 

Stratford Narcotics Detectives, with the assistance of the Bridgeport Police Tactical Narcotics Team and the Connecticut State Police Gang Unit, went to execute search-and-seizure warrants at residences in Stratford and Bridgeport in the case, police said. 

Heyward fled the scene, engaging officers in a vehicle pursuit, police said. He crashed his vehicle, then fled on foot, but was captured and taken into custody, police said. 

A search of both his Stratford and Bridgeport residences yielded over 500 grams of powdered cocaine, 50 grams of crack cocaine packaged for street sale, a large amount of raw bulk heroin, items to process the narcotics for street sale and a large amount of cash, police said.

Heyward, who is currently out on parole for selling narcotics, was and charged with four counts of sale of narcotics, possession with intent to sell cocaine, possession with intent to sell heroin, operating a drug factory, sale of narcotics within 1,500 feet of a prohibited place and interfering with a search warrant. 

He was remanded into police custody and was awaiting a court appearance on Sept. 29.
