The crash happened around 7:40 a.m. on Route 8 near the southbound Exit 11, police said.

Because the black SUV landed against a rock wall, its three occupants were trapped inside and had to be freed by emergency crews from Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Co. 1 from Shelton.

Their injuries were non-life-threatening, police said.

Traffic in the area was backed up for miles for about an hour while the accident scene was cleared. Most of the backup was due to rubbernecking, police said.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
