Police: New York Man, 70, Faces Attempted Strangulation Charge In Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — A 70-year-old New York man was arrested Saturday night after he put his hands around a woman’s neck in a local hotel room and a guest in an adjacent room heard him say he was going to kill her, police said.

James Cannet, of Atlantic Avenue, East Rockaway, and his companion of 35 years were visiting the area and had come back to their room at the Sea Grape Inn when Cannet began questioning the victim about an affair he believed she had in August, police said.

Cannet pushed the 67-year-old victim on the bed, ripped her shirt, put both hands around her neck and said, “I’m going to… kill you,” police said. A fellow guest heard the expletive-laced threat and called police.

When officers arrived they found Cannet in the room and the woman locked in the bathroom.

The woman told officers it was not the first time Cannet had been violent with her, but she declined medical attention, police said. She said she never felt she couldn’t breathe during the incident, police said.

Cannet was charged with second-degree strangulation, second-degree threatening and second-degree breach of peace.

He posted a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 6.
