Jorge Morales, 30, of Shelton was sentenced Wednesday to 46 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing heroin. U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in Bridgeport also ordered that Morales serve the first six months of supervised release in home confinement.

According to court documents, a 21-year-old woman was found unresponsive in a Bridgeport home on April 15, 2016, and transported to the hospital. She later died, according to Daly.

Bridgeport police recovered two baggies of heroin in glassine baggies from the bed next to where the woman was found. The baggies were marked with a particular brand stamp, and a phone seized from the victim revealed numerous calls and texts between the woman and Morales in the days leading up to her overdose, according to officials.

That same day, police conducted a controlled purchase of heroin from Morales in baggies marked with the same brand stamp, according to court documents.

Morales has been detained since his arrest on April 20, 2016. He pleaded guilty July 13 to one count of possession with intent to distribute, and distribution of, heroin.

Daly said this matter stems from an ongoing statewide initiative targeting dealers who distribute heroin, fentanyl or opioids that cause death or serious injury to users.

The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Haven Tactical Diversion Squad with the assistance of the Bridgeport, Derby, Shelton, Monroe, Middlebury and Woodbridge Police Departments. The Tactical Diversion Squad includes participants from the New Haven, Hamden, Greenwich, Shelton, Bristol, Vernon, Wilton, Milford, Monroe, Fairfield and Manchester Police Departments, and the Connecticut State Police.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert M. Spector.
