SHELTON, Conn. — After 38 years in the department, Shelton Police Chief Joel Hurliman is stepping down, according to the Connecticut Post.com.

Mayor Mark Lauretti said Hurliman's last day will be Friday and that he will be replaced, at least temporarily, by Police Capt. Shawn Sequeira, a retired state police detective, said the Connecticut Post.com.

Hurliman had been working on one-year contracts for the past two years, the report said. He began his career as a supernumerary and was appointed a full-time officer in 1980, rising through the ranks until becoming chief in 2006, reported the Connecticut Post.com.

Sequeira retired from the state police as a detective with the Major Case Squad to become a Shelton police captain earlier this year, the Post said.
