The students participated in an essay contest, in which they wrote about important women in Connecticut’s history and how their contributions to the state and nation affected them. The contest – during Women’s History Month in March – was open to all sixth-grade students in Shelton. The contest rules required students to compose a 300-word original essay.

The winners by school were:

  • Perry Hill School: Winner Ashley Jacob, Runner-up Lauren Walsh.
  • St. Joseph School: Winner Chloe Garrow, Runner-up Mark MacDaniel.

“It was a real pleasure to meet with and congratulate these students, who put a lot of thought and hard work into their entries," Perillo said. "All of the entries were showcases of Shelton’s academic excellence, and I thank Liberty Bank for joining us in sponsoring this contest.”

“It’s clear that these students have a meaningful understanding of the important contributions made by women in our state’s history, and it is reflected in their interesting and well-written essays," McGorty. "I offer my congratulations to all of the entrants, and the winners for their great work.”

“It was great to see so many students participate in this event," Kelly said. "They really researched and identified with the subjects they chose and did a wonderful job. I would also like to thank the teachers and parents who are critical in the educational achievements of our youth.”
