SHELTON, Conn. -- Shelton High School will bid adieu to the Class of 2016 at its commencement ceremony Friday at 6 p.m at the high school’s Finn Stadium.
The ceremony will include the poignant presentation of an honorary degree to the parents of a senior killed in a car crash in February.
The decision to memorialized 17-year-old Edmund “Eddy” Conklin came after a months-long fight by his parents Ed and Barbara Conklin against the Shelton Board of Education. HIs parents hoped to have Conklin remembered at commencement to offer friends and family some closure.
The school system had offered to commemorate him at awards night instead, but reversed its decision in May.
Conklin will also be remembered with an empty chair.
The high school will also honor Kristjan Ndoj, another member of the Class of 2016 who was fatally shot two years ago.
Conklin was a star basketball player at Shelton High and was only one course shy of his graduation requirements. He died early Feb. 28 in a rollover crash on Bridgeport Avenue. The crash remains under police investigation.
The rain dates are Saturday, June 11, at 10 a.m. and Monday, June 13 at 6 p.m.
Finn Stadium is located at Shelton High School at 120 Meadow St.
