Beginning Monday, a nearly mile-long stretch of the roadway, also known as Route 1, will be under construction between Frederick Street and Mary Avenue in Stratford, according to the state Department of Transportation. Periodic road closures could occur throughout the day.
The project consists of the milling and paving a portion of Barnum Avenue, along with revising the lane designations and striping, DOT said.
The work includes moving curbs and widening lanes as well as upgrading the existing traffic signals at Barnum Avenue and California Street.
"The purpose and need for this project is to address deficiencies in the existing pavement, increase readability, and enhance safety," Dot said.
Th $2 million project was awarded to Colonna Masonry Concrete & Asphalt Paving in September. Work is scheduled to be completed in June.
Lane closure information:
- U.S. Route 1/Barnum Avenue: No interference with vehicle traffic from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekends.
- State Route 108/Nichols Avenue: No interference with vehicle traffic from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 8 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekends.
- All Other Roadways: No interference with vehicle traffic from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends.
The contractor will be allowed to halt traffic for no more than 10 minutes at a time to install steel span poles.
