“Obviously, Mother Nature decides when the season ends,” said Tom Harbinson, facilities and infrastructure manager for the Shelton farm. “It might continue another week, but probably not much more than that.”
Pick-your-own fans were out in force this week, after the weekend’s rains plumped the crop.
“They’re delicious and somewhat bountiful today,” Harbinson said.
He advised visitors to call Farmer Jones Crop Line — (203) 929-8425 — before driving to the Pumpkinseed Hill and Valley Farm fields, as the farm may modify picking schedules as the season draws to a close.
Jones has been welcoming guests to harvest blueberries for more than 40 years. Packed with nutrients and a sweet, mild taste, they’re the perfect antidote for the dog days of summer.
The fields are open for picking from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday.
Jones’ charges by the pound for blueberries. If you pick more than eight pounds, the price is $3.49 a pound. Less than eight pounds will run you $4.29 a pound.
Though the season is coming to a close, there’s plenty more to do at the farm, Harbinson said.
The farm stand will offer a host of summer veggies and the winery is in full swing, including the popular Summer Wine Downs at the Homestead Farm each Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Guests can try some of the farm’s many wine varieties and pair them with sweet and savory snacks from the Harvest Kitchen.
The winery, which is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, offers a different sangria each Friday and there are often cooking demonstrations.
"It’s a delightful way to wind down on a Friday,” said Harbinson.
