SHELTON, Conn. -- Written Words Bookstore in Shelton will introduce its newest community service program: B.A.R.K., which stands for “Books and Reading for Kids," with a meet-and-greet on Saturday, April 2 from 1 to 2 p.m.
It is a simple program where kids get to practice reading by doing so aloud to a dog. Reading to a calm and well-trained pet can help boost the confidence and self esteem of reluctant readers. Kids are less anxious, less self-conscious and more relaxed knowing that the “listener” is non-judgmental and offers unconditional love.
After coming across the brilliant concept several years ago, Written Words has been looking into hosting its own program to benefit local children.
Ollie, a four-year-old Sheepadoodle was certified in August 2015 through the Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dog Program after going through 18 months of training with his handler/owner Carol Kirby, and is now a working certified therapy dog with the Newtown Strong Therapy Dogs program.
Parents and kids will get a chance to meet Ollie and learn more about the B.A.R.K. program during the meet-and-greet session. B.A.R.K. is a free community service program and is open to children ages six to 12.
