Airman Who Grew Up In Fairfield County Killed In Crash

A U.S. Airman from Bridgeport who died in a multiple-vehicle crash in Idaho will be remembered Sunday, July 1.

Lawrence Manlapit III, 29, the son of Lawrence Manlapit, Jr. and Dorine Norko, who is a transportation specialist for the Bridgeport public schools, was killed June 16 in a multi-vehicle crash on I-84 outside of Boise, Idaho, said the Idaho State Police.

Two other airmen and a truck driver were also killed in the crash, police said.

Based at Mountain Home Air Force Base, in Elmore County, Idaho, Manlapit attended James Curiale school in Bridgeport from kindergarten through eighth grade but graduated from high school in California. Following his graduation, he briefly attended the University of Bridgeport before joining the Air Force.

According to the Air Force, Manlapit was an avionics systems journeyman with the 391st Fighter Squadron.

He joined the Air Force in 2014 and has been stationed at Mountain Home since 2015. His awards include the Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

A visitation for friends and family will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Rd., Trumbull.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2, at 10 a.m., at St. Augustine Cathedral, 359 Washington Ave., Bridgeport.

Manlapit will be buried with full military honors in Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield.
