An escalating fight by text message on Snapchat led to the death of a 16-year-old student and the arrest of an 18-year-old for manslaughter.

Shyhiem Adams of Hartford was charged late Monday with manslaughter following a fight in front of an Enfield home that ended with the stabbing death of Justin Brady, Enfield Police said.

An arrest warrant affidavit for Adams provided by Enfield Police describe how the two had been exchanging messages via Snapchat that escalated to Brady going with a friend to the house at 15 Hoover Lane to "fight" Adams.

Witnesses to the fight told police that Adams stabbed Brady several times and that he had grabbed a knife inside the home before he went outside to meet Brady, the affidavit said.

One witness told police the two had once hung out together, but that Brady had made statements that Adams was "lying," the affidavit said.

Another witness told police that as the two fought, Brady yelled, “He’s cutting me,” the affidavit said.

Following the fight, Adams ran into the home and Brady yelled for someone to call 911.

A neighbor told detectives he saw a group of people standing over a person on the ground and called 911.

Police said they found Brady on the ground, covered in blood and badly hurt, but he was still breathing. He was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center, where he died about an hour later.

Two people who were witnesses took Adams to Hartford, dropping him off on Vine Street, the affidavit said. He was later tracked down by police and arrested.

During an appearance in court on Tuesday, Adams cried that he was a good person, as a fight broke out between a large group of teens present at the hearing.

The judge cleared the courtroom before reducing Adams' bond from $1 million to $750,000 and transferred the case to Superior Court in Hartford.
