SHELTON, Conn. — Crisis counselors were on hand at Shelton High School on Monday morning, the day after a senior was killed in a car crash, according to NBC Connecticut.

Shelton Police, Fire and EMS personnel responded at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb 28, to a single-car crash on Bridgeport Avenue between Crown Point Plaza and Long Hill Cross Roads, police said.

The driver, Edmund Conklin, 17, of Shelton, was found on the roadway outside of the vehicle, police said. Conklin was transported to the hospital and later died of his injuries, police said. Conklin was a senior and a member of the basketball team.

Some students went to Shelton High School on Sunday night to talk with the school's crisis team, and counseling was also offered Monday morning, NBC Connecticut said.

Police met with school administrators, and the Shelton High School crisis team went into action, police said.

Superintendent Chris Clouet told NBC Connecticut that the crisis team is made up of psychologists and teachers who know the students. A special room was also set for students who were having difficulty attending classes, NBC Connecticut said.

"Sadly, I must communicate with all of you that a young man, a senior at Shelton High School, died today as a result of a car accident," Clouet said in a statement.

"First and foremost, this is a family tragedy; secondly, a shock to the entire school community. For Shelton High School students, support will be available at the high school. Please hold this young man in your thoughts and prayers."

The Shelton Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and was investigating the crash, police said. No further details of the crash were released by police.
