David Patton, 65, died Tuesday at Westchester Medical Center, where he had been airlifted after the crash, said Trooper Melissa McMorris.

The crash occurred at 12:42 p.m. after a Carmel woman, traveling west on I-84 failed to see the traffic in front of her slowing down and struck the rear of a Toyota Avalon, setting off a chain-reaction that ended with five vehicles, including an International Harvester crashing into each other, McMorris said.

Patton was a passenger in the Avalon, state police said.

In all, six people were injured, three seriously, state police said.

The Avalon was driven by Linda Laboy, 64, of Danbury. Her vehicle struck the rear of a BMW, which rear-ended a Jeep Wrangler, which ran into the back of an International Harvester truck.

Laboy’s three passengers were seriously injured. All four people in the Avalon are related. John Patton, 96, suffered serious injuries and transported to Danbury Hospital. His daughter Lois R. McKee, 67, of Danbury, suffered serious injuries and was also transported to Danbury Hospital.

David R. Patton, who was killed in the crash, was his son.

The driver, Laboy, is also his daughter. She was transported to Danbury Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

State Police are not sure if Patton is related to another injured victim, 96-year-old John Patton of Danbury, who was a passenger in the same car.

"The main thing we are focusing on at this time if asking for witnesses to the crash to come forward," said McMorris.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact the Brewster Bureau of Criminal Investigation by calling 845-677-7300.
