A man who was nabbed within minutes of robbing a Stamford bank has been identified by police.

Charles Redshirt, 35, of Stamford, was arrested by police in just 8 minutes after robbing the First Bank of Greenwich at 900 Summer St., around 12:50 p.m. Monday, said the Stamford Police Department.

Officers Christopher Festa and John McClafferty arrived on scene less than a minute from the initial call. Officer Festa immediately released Redshirt's description and direction of travel to numerous officers responding to the area to establish a perimeter, said Lt. Nick Montagnese.

A gun was mentioned on the scene but was not displayed during the robbery.

Officer McKay found a black hooded sweatshirt on Franklin Street, which was consistent with the clothing description. Additionally, a stocking and a knife were found in the same area.

Shortly after the police dispatch center received a call from a business at 141 Franklin St. stating that Redshirt was on the second floor of the building.

As a perimeter was set up around the building, Officer McKay observed a suspect matching the description walking through the lobby. Sgt. Chris Petrizzi and Officer McKay entered the lobby and took Redshirt down at gunpoint, the department said.

Proceeds from the robbery were found on Redshirt, Montagnese said.

“All the patrol officers did a fantastic job here,” said Montagnese. "It took a total of 8 minutes from the time the first call was made to 911 and the suspect was in custody."

Redshirt was positively identified as the robbery suspect by several witnesses from the bank and others who were out on the street during their lunch hour and observed him flee the bank.

"The Stamford Police Department would like to thank the numerous witnesses who came forward after observing the suspect flee the bank on foot," the department said.

Redshirt was charged with robbery, larceny, possession of a dangerous weapon, two counts of threatening and criminal trespass. He is being held on $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 30.
