Brent Whiteman of Bridgeport was arrested Friday on a warrant charging him with the  Feb. 8, 2017, murder of his wife's uncle, Robert Jones, said Av Harris, spokesman for the Bridgeport Police.

Whiteman's wife, Tynisha Hall, is currently awaiting trial for her role in the murder. Whiteman and Hall were the caregivers for the 61-year-old victim, who was disabled and unable to live on his own.

Recent evidence revealed that Whiteman and Hall routinely abused Jones by hitting, cutting and burning him until he succumbed to the physical abuse, police said.

Hall, a licensed nursing assistant, was the caretaker for Robert Jones, 61.

At about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8, an ambulance was dispatched to 304 Dover St. in Bridgeport, a home rented by Hall's family.

By the time first responders arrived, Jones had been dead for some time, but Hall insisted he be taken to Bridgeport Hospital, where doctors found cuts and scratches on his face and burns on his lower extremities.

Hall said that Jones had been cold and unresponsive at about noon and that she had put a lit cigarette in his hands. Jones also had one large and one small cut on the back of his head, although no blood had been found in the home.

During a police search of the home Feb. 11, police sprayed a re-agent and found a blood splatter pattern from the floor to the ceiling in the bathroom.

Whiteman was charged with murder abuse of a person, the risk of injury to a child and tampering with evidence. He is being held on $1 million bond.

"This case is an example of excellent police work by all involved, especially the members of the Homicide Unit and Identification Unit," said Lt. Christopher LaMaine of the department's Detective Bureau.
